We tend to imagine Public Museums and Department Stores at opposite ends of the cultural spectrum, although they have more in common than we generally assume.

Both actively accumulate, display and distribute the artifacts they contain. Both present us with collections of things; constructing specific social relationships between artifact and visitor, between goods and shoppers. Both aim to structure the limit of what's possible through our encounter with material artifacts.

We in turn replicate this learned behaviour in our interaction with a wider material culture. Perhaps our social relations have less to do with specific things; for example, shoes, toys, gifts, ceramics or works of art, and more to do with seductive modes of their collection and presentation.

What the two places most obviously share -in their encyclopedic ambitions, complex layout and subsequent use by visitors- is the inducement of a highly creative state, known as browsing. Our leaflet Browse mimics this state by arranging a display case of photographs.

Browse feels like a visitor guide, although instead of leading you on a prepared tour, its layout invites you to reflect upon your relationship to objects stripped of their immediate context. Liberated, you will be encouraged -leisurely- to slide in and out of various types of classification, browse !

Browse was readily available from dispensers in both the British Museum and Selfridge's Department store for the duration of the exhibition.

In many ways Browse was an aperatif for The Value of Things, its also part of Collected, and a text Everything attempts to provide some theoretical background.

Errata is a parasitical intervention into a public museum, via the catalogue of the collection.

From the Introduction

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is comprised of a sequence of buildings that have evolved since the 1950`s, extending self-consciously, but unobtrusively through out the surrounding parkland. The buildings simultaneously embrace and exclude the environment. Trees, greenery and shocking glimpses of the Sound -the sea separating Denmark and Sweden- expand your experience of the collection through a spectacular succession of glazed passages, galleries and picture windows.

As you walk through the museum, its spaces unfold; entrance, gallery, corridor, garden, another gallery, children's house, cafe, beach, reading room, terrace and shop. The shift in qualities of space is reflected in the values of the artefacts contained; if not in the artefacts, then in the quality of attention you extend to them. A parallel material sequence may include; money, painting, chair, print, sculpture, tree, postcard, another painting, book, glass, souvenir, etc...

While following the catalogues formal blueprint Errata proposes straying and sliding from art to artefact and back again. Errata uncovers the means by which the museum constructs and authorises specific objects, by tracing the dissemination, regulation and exclusion of the collection through display, presentation and representation of objects and images.

Errata was freely availible during the exhibition as an additional guide to the Museum, and included with every catalogue purchase.

We were invited by Gallery Transit to make a project for the 1996 opening of their new gallery space.

In 1994 the gallery relocated in a beautiful Art Nouveau inspired town house. The only previous occupants, the owners, had stored throughout the house all their belongings, clothes and furniture. Transit moved all their accumulated possessions, as well as the gallery, into the building. They decided to leave only the salon, the physical core of the house free of domestic objects, painted white as the exhibition space.

Two pairs of lives at either end of the century have been laid over one another, the similarities and differences can be found in the stored chaos of material possessions.

With every room of the house nearly full, the conventional classification of things has collapsed. Paintings are stacked on top of furniture, souvenirs mix with food, clothes merge with packed libraries; whose, when, and where, are difficult questions even for the occupants to answer. Into this extraordinary situation we came to work. What began as a photographic inventory -following the logic of Lost Property - gradually disintegrated. However tempting, it seemed dishonest to introduce a stranger's order - to put words into people's mouths - into the complexity of this material entanglement.

What evolved were 148 images and sound, presented in a form of a slide show viewable from the living room of 31 Tiensevest during the duration of the exhibition.

We produced a limited edition CD rom as a catalogue of the project, it contains all the images and features a soundtrack specially composed by the Bammer Project.

Contents:31 Tiensevest was included as part of Material Culture at the Hayward Gallery, London 1998.
